The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. To wit, the Alternative Income REIT PLC (LON:AIRE) share price is 22% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 16% (not including dividends) in the same period. That’s a solid performance by our standards! Unfortunately the longer term returns are not so good, with the stock falling 18% in the last three years.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Alternative Income REIT’s TSR for the last 1 year was 31%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Pleasingly, Alternative Income REIT’s total shareholder return last year was 31%. That’s including the dividend. That gain actually surpasses the 0.9% TSR it generated (per year) over three years. The improving returns to shareholders suggests the stock is becoming more popular with time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance.
