Ethereum Foundation Forms Privacy Cluster to Boost On-Chain Privacy

The Ethereum Foundation has announced the creation of the Privacy Cluster, a specialized team of 47 researchers, engineers, and cryptographers, led by Igor Barinov, founder of Blockscout and xDai. The initiative aims to make privacy a core feature of Ethereum, building on existing community-led projects and ongoing research efforts.

In a recent blog post, the foundation emphasized that Ethereum was designed as a platform for digital trust at civilizational scale, and that maintaining credibility requires privacy to be embedded at the protocol level.

What the Privacy Cluster Will Do

The Privacy Cluster will focus on strengthening user privacy across Ethereum’s blockchain, addressing risks such as:

The team will work on Layer 1 improvements, including confidential transfers, private payments, and cryptographic safeguards, ensuring users’ on-chain activities remain secure and private.

Building on Existing Research

The Privacy Cluster expands upon the Ethereum Foundation’s Privacy & Scaling Explorations (PSE) team, which has been actively researching privacy solutions since 2018. By combining efforts, the cluster aims to advance privacy-preserving tools and protocols, including:

  • Zero-knowledge proofs for confidential transactions

  • Protocol improvements to secure wallet and identity operations

  • Applications for private payments and decentralized identity management

The initiative will also collaborate with the broader Ethereum community to integrate best-in-class privacy solutions into existing and future Ethereum layers.

A Roadmap for On-Chain Privacy

Alongside the team announcement, the foundation released a roadmap detailing progress toward end-to-end privacy integration. The plan covers both research milestones and practical implementation strategies to ensure that Ethereum remains a secure and private platform for users worldwide.

By embedding privacy at the core of Ethereum, the foundation aims to mitigate metadata leaks, transaction traceability, and external surveillance, addressing concerns that have grown alongside Ethereum’s increasing adoption.

As blockchain adoption grows, privacy concerns are becoming more prominent. Centralized and decentralized exchanges, DeFi applications, and Layer 2 solutions increasingly expose user information through transaction data. The Privacy Cluster seeks to future-proof Ethereum by embedding privacy natively into the protocol, rather than relying solely on external privacy layers.
