Guru Nanak Jayanti holiday: Is stock market open or closed for trading today?

Investors will have to wait another day to make their next market move as the Indian stock market remains closed today, Wednesday, November 5, on account of Guru Nanak Jayanti 2025.

Trading will resume on Thursday, November 6, after the mid-week holiday that marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism.

The stock market holiday comes after a weak trading session on Tuesday, where benchmark indices ended lower amid continued selling by foreign institutional investors (FIIs). The Sensex fell over 500 points, while the Nifty closed 170 points lower, reflecting cautious sentiment ahead of key global economic data.

MARKET CLOSED ACROSS ALL SEGMENTS

Both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) are closed today across all trading segments — including equity, derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLB), currency derivatives, and electronic gold receipts (EGRs).

The holiday is the second market closure in November 2025 and the only one scheduled for this month, as per the stock market holiday calendar issued by the exchanges earlier this year.

With today’s closure, the trading week for Dalal Street will be limited to four days. Normal operations will resume tomorrow, Thursday, November 6.

MCX ALSO CLOSED TODAY

Trading at the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) is also suspended for both the morning and evening sessions on account of Guru Nanak Jayanti.

Commodity markets, including those dealing in gold, silver, crude oil, and other futures, will remain shut throughout the day and reopen for normal trading on Thursday, November 6.

SIGNIFICANCE OF GURU NANAK JAYANTI

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab or Prakash Parv, marks the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first of the ten Sikh Gurus and the founder of Sikhism.

The festival is celebrated across India and globally by the Sikh community with prayers, Akhand Path (a 48-hour continuous recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib), Nagar Kirtans (religious processions), and Langars (community feasts).

The occasion symbolises Guru Nanak’s teachings of equality, humility, compassion, and selfless service, values that continue to guide millions of followers worldwide.

REMAINING STOCK MARKET HOLIDAYS IN 2025

According to the official stock market holiday calendar for 2025, Dalal Street will observe a total of 14 trading holidays this year.

After today’s closure for Guru Nanak Jayanti, only one more trading holiday remains for the year — December 25 (Christmas).

Apart from these scheduled holidays, the stock market also remains closed on all Saturdays and Sundays as part of the regular weekend schedule.

Market analysts expect the focus to shift back to earnings announcements, global economic cues, and foreign fund flows once trading resumes on Thursday.

With FIIs turning net sellers in recent sessions, domestic investors will be watching for signals from global markets and commodity price movements, especially oil and gold, which have seen fluctuations in recent days.
