Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce seems to be keeping fans and analysts waiting when it comes to his retirement plans. The four-time All-Pro tight end said he will wait until the season ends before deciding on his NFL future, though he wants to do it early to help the Chiefs prepare for what comes next.
Travis Kelce speaks on his retirement
Travis Kelce addressed retirement speculation on November 21, explaining that while he isn’t making any decisions during the season, he wants to be fair to the franchise that has shaped his career. With the new league year beginning on March 11 and free agency discussions opening around the same time, his decision will be crucial for Kansas City’s roster planning.

Kelce mentioned he admired how his brother, Jason Kelce, handled his own retirement announcement with the Philadelphia Eagles. Jason officially retired on March 4, 2024, giving the team a comfortable window to build its roster for the next year. Travis hopes to follow that thoughtful example.
“Seeing my brother go through it and seeing — I don’t know, how the league works … I want to give the Chiefs a good opportunity, whether I come back or not, and vice versa,” Travis Kelce said. He further stated that he intends to finalize his plans before the draft and free agency. “It’s one of those things where I’d like to make that decision before they have draft picks and free agency opens,” Kelce said, adding, “All of that will be after the season. I won’t think about it until then.” (via NFL)
Kelce’s retirement plans became an even bigger topic after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl loss to the Eagles in February. Many wondered if the 10-time Pro Bowler would walk away, but he quickly committed to returning and focused on improving his conditioning during the offseason. His efforts have shown as he already has 50 receptions for 631 yards and four touchdowns this year.
