After another last-second escape to defeat Finland 3-2 in the semifinal of the men’s Olympic hockey tournament, the cardiac Canadian men’s hockey team will go for gold against the United States today at 8:10 a.m. EST/5:10 a.m. PST.

For this upcoming matchup, Sidney Crosby won’t be in the lineup on Sunday, reports Elliotte Friedman. Canada’s captain also missed the semifinal, after suffering an injury vs. Czechia in the quarters.

Despite the news, it’s set to be a classic game in this heated rivalry. Along with plenty on the line, there’s the current added tension between these two countries due to the political climate, which we saw take centre stage at last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off, as Canada ultimately came away with the final win.

It’s always significant when Team Canada takes the ice in Olympic hockey, but these 2026 Games have been even more special than usual as its the first time since the 2014 Games in Sochi that NHL players are back playing in the Olympics. That makes this the most high stakes best-on-best hockey tournament in 12 years.

Canada comes into Sunday’s matchup been thoroughly tested in the knockout round by Czechia and Finland, requiring last-ditch heroics to escape with both of those wins after ripping through the group stage.

In the semifinals against Finland, Canada went down early but managed to storm back and steal a win. That contest wasn’t without controversy, but it showed further proof that Canada is able to find a way when tested.

With the Crosby injury, Canada’s starting lines look a little different than normal.

Canada’s going with its nuclear “Triple Mack” line with Connor McDavid centring Macklin Celebrini and Nathan MacKinnon.

This moves up what was formerly the Sidney Crosby-centred Nick Suzuki line to the second line.

Bo Horvat as been moved back down to centre the fourth line and Tom Wilson is now Sam Bennett’s right winger on the third line.

Once again, Josh Morrissey is out for Canada and Jordan Binnington gets the start in net.

Looking at the United States, it faced a much easier road to the gold-medal game, trouncing Slovakia in the semifinal 6-2.

This isn’t to say the Americans haven’t faced some adversity in the tournament, however. They barely squeaked by Sweden in their quarterfinal matchup, winning 2-1 in overtime off of a wicked strike from Quinn Hughes.
