Is the stock market closed on Good Friday? A guide to banks, mail and more

Good Friday is not a federal holiday, but there are still some closures to be aware of.

WASHINGTON — Good Friday, observed April 3, 2026, is a widely recognized Christian holiday in the United States, but it carries a confusing mix of closures and normal operations depending on where you live and what you need to do.

Good Friday is not a U.S. federal holiday, but there are some closures to be aware of.

Here’s a breakdown of what’s open and what’s closed.

Stock market

The stock market is the most notable closure on Good Friday.

U.S. stock markets, including the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange, will be closed Friday, April 3, in observance of Good Friday. Markets will reopen on Monday, April 6.

Good Friday has long been part of the U.S. stock market holiday schedule, even though it is not a federal holiday. It is a standard trading holiday alongside closures such as New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

As for bonds, the U.S. bond market will close at noon ET Friday, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

Cryptocurrency markets are unaffected.

Banks

Good Friday is not a Federal Reserve holiday, and most banks will operate normally on Friday, April 3.

Because the Federal Reserve stays open, wire transfers, ACH processing and most bank operations continue as usual on April 3, 2026.

However, people in certain states should double-check with their local branch. A handful of smaller community banks or credit unions may choose to close, especially in states that recognize Good Friday as a state holiday.

Government offices

Good Friday and Easter Monday are not federal holidays. All federal holidays are non-religious, other than Christmas Day. That means federal government offices are open and operating normally Friday.

Good Friday is a state holiday in a dozen states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota and Tennessee, where state government offices close and some schools may be closed as well. Texas designates it as an optional holiday for state employees.

Post office and mail delivery

Good Friday is not a federal holiday, so USPS operates as usual. That means you can send mail, receive deliveries and visit your local branch.

The U.S. Postal Service will deliver mail and packages normally on Good Friday, April 3, 2026. Post offices will be open during regular business hours, and carriers will make their usual routes.

UPS and FedEx are also operating. Mail will be delivered as usual, as will UPS and FedEx services.

Easter Sunday, April 5, is a different story — post offices are closed on Sundays regardless of the holiday.

Schools

There is no national school closure on Good Friday.

In states that carry a state holiday designation, public schools are closed in many districts.

In states where Good Friday is not a state holiday, school closures depend entirely on whether the individual district has incorporated Good Friday into its Spring Break or designated it as a stand-alone holiday.

Retail stores and restaurants

Retail stores and restaurants will generally remain open with regular hours. Most national chains do not observe Good Friday as a closure day.
