Panama has high hopes heading into this year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup as they kick off their tournament on Monday against Guadeloupe.
The Gold Cup has been a staple of the continental football landscape since 1991. While the U.S., Canada and Mexico have dominated the tournament, it has given smaller countries the opportunity to play at a high level.

Panama is surprisingly one of the notable favorites heading into this year’s tournament. The country earned that distinction thanks to its recent performances on the international stage. In 2023, Los Canaleros made it to the Gold Cup Final for the first time in two decades, losing to Mexico. Panama followed that up by beating the United States in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals before losing to La Tri again in the final.
Nevertheless, this age of Panamian football could lead to another berth in the FIFA World Cup.
Guadeloupe, the only non-FIFA member in the tournament, is looking to build off its ninth-place finish from two years ago.
These two teams have split their two Gold Cup matches in 2009 and 2011.
