Two curling powers get set to face off for the gold medal on Saturday, as Canada and Great Britain meet in the final of the men’s Curling tournament at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Curling was first seen in the Olympic program since the inaugural Winter Games in France in 1924, though it was not a medal event until 1998. The sport features a mix of strategy and skill that is very popular in parts of North America and Europe.
Despite all of the controversy surrounding the team earlier in the tournament, the Canadians have managed to put together a strong effort to make a deep run in Italy. The team ended up finishing second in the round robin, losing only to Norway and Switzerland. Canada managed to avenge its loss to the Norwegians in the semifinals on Thursday, coming away with a hard-fought 5-4 victory, advancing to the gold medal match for the first time since 2014.
Canada has won more gold medals (3) than any other country in men’s Olympic curling, winning in 2006, 2010 and 2014.
Great Britain came into the semifinals after going 5-4 in the round robin, finishing fourth. Yet, they bounced back by stunning the previously unbeaten Swiss team in the semifinals, advancing to the final for the fourth time.
The Brits lost to Sweden in the gold medal match four years ago in Beijing, having not won gold since the inaugural tournament in 1924.
Canada beat Great Britain, 9-5, during the round robin.
