The defending CONCACAF Gold Cup Champions look to start this year’s tournament on the right foot, as Mexico kicks off the tournament on Saturday night against the Dominican Republic.
The Gold Cup, formerly known as the CONCACAF Championship, has been a staple of the continental football landscape since 1991. While the U.S., Canada and Mexico have dominated the tournament, it has given smaller countries the opportunity to play at a high level.

Mexico comes into this year’s tournament as huge favorites. La Tri won the nation’s ninth Gold Cup in 2023, and followed that up with a triumphant victory in the CONCACAF Nations League this past year. They bring in a lot of the talent that has helped them win over the past couple of years with the hopes of competing for a trophy once again.
This is the first time the Dominican Republic has ever competed in the Gold Cup, and their first top-tier international tournament since the Pan American Games in 2023. The country has competed in the Nations League, but have not made it out of League B.
Mexico is 2-1-0 against the Dominican Republic, though the two nations have not met since 1990.
