The U.S. defeated Costa Rica in a come-from-behind win, 4-3 on penalties to advance to the semifinals and Guatemala pulled off the upset over Canada, 6-5 on penalties. Guatemala finished second to Panama in the group stage with a record of 2-1.
The United States went undefeated in the group stage with wins over Trinidad and Tobago, Saudi Arabia and Haiti. This marks the 17th time the U.S. has advanced to the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals.
The U.S. holds an all-time 16-5-6 record over Guatemala and took a 1-0 victory the last time the two met in the Gold Cup in 2007.
The winner of tonight’s match will advance to play the winner of the Mexico vs. Honduras semifinal match in the final on Sunday.
