FOX5 Investigates Scam Alert: Scammers use talk of tariffs, trade war as inspiration for new rip-off

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Tariffs have been a hot topic lately, and bad actors know it. The Better Business Bureau says they’re now using all the talk about a trade war to rip you off.

The BBB says it happens most often when you buy something through an online ad. The ad takes you to a website that appears legitimate. The prices seem reasonable, the checkout process is simple and quick.

But then, your order never arrives. And when you contact customer service, you get vague, automated emails urging patience.

Eventually, you’ll get an email saying your package is stuck in transit due to tariffs, customs delays, or changes in international regulations. Sometimes, they’ll ask you to pay more money to facilitate delivery. Other times, you’ll get an erroneous tracking number showing your package delivered to another state.

To avoid this type of scam, be skeptical of sponsored ads on social media or search engines.

Do your research and check reviews before buying. Also, check the website carefully. Look for misspellings, poor grammar, or suspicious URLs. Use a credit card for all online purchases for maximum fraud protection. And, be sure to save copies of your order details in case you need to file a dispute, or report a scam.
