Investing in big tech companies isn’t always a financial windfall, as this sector can be temperamental where the stock market is concerned. Take Apple for example, the past decade, or even several decades, have typically been good for investors. So, what if you invested $1,000 over a decade ago, and how much would you have now?

Quick Take: Apple Stock’s Current Performance

Unfortunately, Apple (AAPL) has not had the best year so far. Thanks to tariff concerns and lower iPhone sales than expected, the company has taken a bit of a bath in the market. This, coupled with the fact that the stock itself is expensive, has Apple battling everything from rising costs to ineffectively monetizing AI.

However, as with any industry giant, don’t count AAPL out just yet, as many Wall Street analysts are predicting Apple’s earnings will increase at 6% annually through 2026. Here are some current standings for the stock:

  • Stock price: $201.28

  • Market cap: $3 trillion

  • 52-week high: $260.10

  • 52-week low: $169.21

An Apple Stock Timeline For Investors: 2012 to Present

On March 9, 2012, Apple announced plans to reinstate its dividend. The day after, shares traded for around $600 each. If your broker allowed the purchase of fractional shares back then, you could have bought one and two-thirds shares for $1,000.

Since then, Apple split its stock twice: 7-for-1 in 2014 and 4-for-1 in 2020. Consequently, you’d have 46 and two-thirds shares today from the original $1,000 purchase. Today, those shares would be worth about $9,378. However, if you reinvested your remainder in dividend payments over the past 14 years, you’d now have approximately 55 shares worth approximately $11,054.

Is it Too Late To Invest in Apple?

Even if you didn’t invest in Apple in 2012, it’s not too late to capitalize on the company’s growth.

Apple stock is down this year, thanks to soft iPhone sales, sizeable tariffs, an antitrust lawsuit involving Alphabet and other issues. In fact, recently, President Donald Trump actually further threatened the company’s profitability to the tune of levying tariffs at least 25% on Apple products if chief executive Tim Cook doesn’t commit to making iPhones in the United States.

The company is also cash-rich with modest debt and has a market capitalization of just over $3 trillion. It’s one of the most profitable companies in the world. Here are a few key considerations:

  • Apple’s net income was $97.294 billion as of the Trailing Twelve Months (TTM) ending March 31, 2025, which is a 3.08% decrease year-over-year.

  • Apple reported a net income of $93.736 billion in its last fiscal year (2024), which was a 3.36% decline from the previous year.

  • Apple’s last quarterly net income was $24.780 billion, which was a 4.84% increase year-over-year.

  • In terms of debt, the company has about $98.19 billion in long-term debt and $49 billion in other long-term liabilities. While this is a huge amount of debt, it’s not bad for a company of Apple’s size.

Final Take To GO: Is Apple (AAPL) Stock a Buy?

The bottom line is that there is still a big reason to invest in Apple: it’s Apple. There may be declines over the short term, but the company has built one of the most loyal fan bases in the world over the decades, and those fans are unlikely to vanish overnight.

You should note that the company’s business model is evolving from a focus on devices to a cultural and solutions-oriented one. Apple is expanding its digital ecosystem, which drives hardware and software sales, so we could see a shift in the growth of its services branch.
