ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – The appeals process for reassessments wrapped up in Roanoke. On Monday, City Council members got an update on those appeals. WDBJ7 breaks down the results.
“We’re updating City Council and the citizens on projected increases after appeal decisions. Appeals are when citizens have an opportunity to come in and contest their values,” said Real Estate Valuation Director Kelvin Bratton.
Bratton said residents submitted 392 reassessment appeals this year, valuing over $150,655,000.
“Making sure the citizens have an opportunity to contest value and make sure that we have our information correct. So, it’s a good thing when citizens feel like they can participate in the process of having their values reviewed,” he said.
Bratton said there were 33 commercial appeals, 22 multi-family appeals, and 337 residential appeals.
He said they were able to sustain 264 of those appeals, while 128 reassessments were changed.
“One of the things we’ve always prided ourselves on is working with citizens on determining whether or not their property information was correct or not. That’s a direct indication or has a direct impact on their value,” he added.
Bratton said the process to appeal with the City of Roanoke has ended.
If residents still have a value they would like to appeal, they have until April 7 to submit one to the Board of Equalization.
“We encourage folks to appeal to them as well as it’s a great opportunity for them to have someone independent of our office review their complaint,” he closed.
