Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Wednesday stood firm in opposition to the U.S. and Israeli conflict with Iran citing international discourse amid President Trump’s threats around trade with the European nation.

“We are not going to be complicit in something that is bad for the world and is also contrary to our values and interests, just out of fear of reprisals from someone,” Sánchez said in a televised address.

His comments come after Trump threatened to put a full embargo on Madrid and “cut off all dealings” with the nation over its criticism of the U.S. military operation.

“The Spanish Government’s position on this situation is clear and consistent,” Sánchez said Wednesday in a statement. “It is the same position we have maintained in Ukraine and also in Gaza. Firstly, we reject the breach of international law that protects us all, especially the most vulnerable members, the civilian population.”

“Secondly, we must not assume that the world can only solve its problems through conflict and bombs. And finally, we must not repeat the mistakes of the past,” he added.

Spanish officials have not only spoken out against the war but has also blocked the U.S. from using its air bases for strikes on Iran.

In the midst of conflict across the Middle East, Sánchez said, “We will protect our citizens, prepare measures to cushion the economic impact, and work with Europe for a coordinated response that prioritizes peace and diplomacy.”

On Wednesday, the prime minister also noted that he’s received supportive messages from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron and President of the European Council Antonio Costa and other allies.

It is unclear how Trump could single out Spain without hitting the entire EU with trade restrictions.

“NO TO WAR. Yes to trade, cooperation and prosperity,” the prime minister wrote in a post on social platform X.
