The blue-chip index was up 56 points, or up 0.1%, after trading lower for much of the morning. The S&P 500 was still down 1.8%. The Nasdaq Composite slid 3%.
A majority of Dow and S&P 500 stocks were rising, but both indexes were being dragged down by a selloff in stocks linked to the artificial intelligence trade. Nvidia, down 15%, was the Dow’s biggest laggard. Microsoft was also a significant drag with its 3.6% drop to $427.90. The Dow is a price-weighted index, so Microsoft’s large stock price gives it significant pull. Nvidia was shaving 135 points off the index. Microsoft erased 104 points off the Dow, even though it shaved off far less in market cap than Nvidia.
