The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) in Warren are investigating a cryptocurrency scam that defrauded an elderly couple and are urging residents to remain vigilant against similar schemes.
According to investigators, the victims were contacted by an individual posing as a legitimate authority. The scammer instructed the couple to withdraw cash from their bank and deposit it into a Bitcoin ATM (cryptocurrency kiosk) under the pretense of protecting their funds.
PSP reminds residents that no legitimate government agency, bank, or company will ever request payment of fees, fines, or account protection by depositing cash into a Bitcoin ATM.
Be cautious of unsolicited calls, texts, emails, or pop-up messages claiming your accounts are compromised or demanding urgent action.
