Investing In Home Security

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – More and more people are spending money to keep their homes safe. They are investing in various monitoring systems they can access anytime online.

Some are also sharing what their security cameras capture with law enforcement.

“It’s great to have those at your residence. The camera systems are phenomenal because you can send us the photographs and videos, and we can identify people that way,” explains Cape Girardeau Police patrolman Bobby Newton.

Security experts also agree, but say it is important to choose the right system for your needs, such as for home use versus for a business.

“The biggest thing to think about is that there are all kinds of do-it-yourself systems. The problem with the do-it-yourself systems that you get online are that you have to do it yourself, and they are not always the best quality,” Shawn Jackson, with H&R Alarms said.

The type of system to choose is not the only important factor.

“For anyone that is looking to purchase a security system whether it be an in-home security system or a camera system. Just make sure that it is a reputable company that you are going with and somebody that’s legit,” Newton said.

If you have worries about whether a company is a scam, check with the Better Business Bureau and/or your local police.

“Get a trained factory technician that’s going to come on sight install it properly test it properly make sure it’s working that way you don’t have those false alarms, ” Jackson said.

Either way, police believe investing in a security system is the way to go.

“We highly encourage everyone to have some kind of security measures at your residence,” Newton said.

Not only does having security protect you, but police believe it helps the community by aiding investigators in identifying suspicious people.

“Again we are seeing an influx in people getting into vehicles a lot of times those vehicles are left unlocked, but again we highly encourage everyone to have some sort of security at your residence,” explained Newton.

The cost for a quality-grade security system can range anywhere from a few hundred dollars to thousands.
